Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, launched the Digital India campaign in 2015 with the goal of transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Here are some of the different steps taken by his government to promote digital India:
Digital Infrastructure: The government has invested in the creation of digital infrastructure, including the establishment of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), which aims to connect over 2.5 lakh villages in India with high-speed broadband internet.
e-Governance: The government has implemented various e-governance initiatives such as the Digital Locker, which allows citizens to store their documents securely in the cloud and access them from anywhere, and the e-NAM (National Agriculture Market), which provides a platform for farmers to sell their produce directly to buyers online.
Mobile Connectivity: The government has launched various initiatives to increase mobile connectivity in rural areas, including the provision of mobile towers in remote areas, the use of satellite technology to provide connectivity in remote areas, and the launch of the BharatNet project, which aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity to rural areas.
Digital Literacy: The government has launched various programs to promote digital literacy, including the Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (DISHA), which aims to provide digital literacy training to 6 crore citizens, and the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA), which aims to provide digital literacy training to 6 crore rural citizens.
Digital Payments: The government has launched various initiatives to promote digital payments, including the BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) app, which enables easy and secure digital payments, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which provides a single platform for multiple bank accounts.
Startups: The government has launched various initiatives to promote startups in the technology sector, including the Startup India initiative, which provides various incentives and support to startups in the technology sector.
There are many other programs and initiatives under this digital empowerment like digital governance where almost every department is now made online and every citizen can use almost all the services online. Overall, the Digital India campaign has been a successful major initiative of the Modi government to promote the use of technology in various aspects of Indian society and the economy. This has brought comfort and ease to the common man who used to struggle to get things done by going through various offices and queues. Also thanks to the Digital India concept due to which whole India was able to run even during the pandemic time when coming out was not possible. Students were able to complete their academic education and organizations were able to run smooth without any hiccups. This would not have been possible without a proper digital infrastructure.
